Several brands urge ban on microplastics

A group of around twenty brands and associations, led by Weleda, Beauty Kitchen and Naïf, has sent an open letter to the European Commission calling for a faster and more comprehensive ban on microplastics in cosmetics. The letter's signatories [1], who define themselves as already microplastic-free, claim that the draft legislation goes "neither far nor fast enough", largely due to "particularly long" transition periods.
Under the current proposal, transition periods would range from four years for rinsed products to 12 years for certain make-up products. Encapsulated fragrances would benefit from five to eight years, and leave-on cosmetics would have six years to adapt.
"Unnecessarily lenient
The main arguments in support of these transition periods are the lack of alternatives, the cost of reformulation and the potential impact on product performance. All explanations that the signatories of the open letter consider unfounded....
