The EU steps up its fight against microplastic pollution
Description
The European Union has reached a compromise to strengthen legislation on microplastics, in particular by targeting leaks of plastic granules (‘pellets’) into the environment. Companies will have to implement prevention plans and, depending on their size, obtain independent certification or make a self-declaration. Maritime transport is included in the text, despite some resistance. This future regulation aims to curb long-term pollution, and is due to come into force in the coming months.
